Usually I don’t do posts for every player cut just because that is way too much work but obviously Chris Cooley is a special case who deserves a post. While Cooley has been injured these last couple of years and wasn’t himself even when he was on the field, he was a hell of a player when he was with the Skins. He was a 3rd round tight end drafted out of Utah St so in most fans’ minds when he was drafted: really anything that we got out of him was gravy. Little did we know that we were getting such a good player. The one thing I always thought about Chris was that he was just that guy that was always open. He never seemed particularly fast or big but he was always open, would always catch it, and was always a load to bring down once he got it. Quite simply there weren’t many players who you could count on more than Chris Cooley on the football field.

RG3 vs Kirk Cousins QB Controversy?
No. I have heard some talk from various media outlets (most notably on first take with Skippy B this morning) about whether or not there is a QB controversy in D.C. after RG 3′s poor performance against the Bears first team defense (minus Urlacher) on Saturday night while Cousins flourished against the Bears 3rd team defense (also without Urlacher). Obviously situations like these almost always call for some sort of clamoring from the non-patient fans for the team to start the 3rd stringer over the starter because if the starter can’t get the job done then why not try out the backup right? Well in this case that is really not the scenario at all for a lot of reasons.
Redskins vs Bears Thoughts
The Skins take on the Bears tonight so I am pretty excited as we get to watch RG3 for the 2nd time. Apparently tonight Griffin is supposed to get between 30 and 35 plays which means he will play about the first half which is fairly standard for preseason ball. Really RG3 is the only main thing I am going to be looking at tonight. Hopefully they give him some more opportunities to throw the ball because last time they babied him a bit by only letting him throw twice in the first 2 possessions. I didn’t hate the idea, being it was his first ever NFL action but as a fan I’d like to see a whole half of non-held-back (for lack of a better word) play from RG3 tonight. Only other thing I will really be interested in is how the defense/secondary plays because that is easily our biggest question mark on that side of the ball. We will be tested against Cutler/Marshall for probably close to a half so I’m interested to see how we fare. I say RG3 throws for 12/18 on his passes for 123 yards and a touchdown with one rush for 8 yards. Skins lead at half by 4 but lose game by 3. You heard it hear first.
Redskins Preseason Game 1 Recap
So I am pretty much going to sound like the laziest bum ever here because not only did I take a nap and forget to write the preview for the Skins first preseason game but I also only watched about 30 mins of the game. I wanted to get some hot wings for the Skins first action of the season but when I went out to get them it was traffic everywhere and it caused me to miss RG3′s first 2 possessions so I pretty much cried. However apparently I didn’t really miss that much considering other than an Evan Royster fumble that the Bills converted into a FG, there really wasn’t any other action. I managed to watch a couple of defensive possessions (when the starters were in) and one RG3 possession but as soon as Rex Grossman came in and is first pass hit the hands of the defensive back, I had to turn the channel.
Big Day for Beltway Sports Fans
Today is a very big and exciting day for Beltway sports fans as not only are our two local NFL teams teeing off their preseason games tonight, but the Orioles have also called up their #2 prospect. In somewhat shocking news the O’s called up Bowie SS Manny Machado today and he will most likely start in tonight’s series opener against the Royals. This was super unexpected because Machado wasn’t even doing that great in Bowie (hitting like .260) and after most of their recent prospects have disappointed in the majors, it was thought that they would take their time and let Manny mature as much as possible in the minors but I guess how many times do the O’s compete for the playoffs (once in 15 years apparently).
Redskins Training Camp Has Begun!
Yesterday was the mark of a very good day for football fans in the Nation’s capital as it was the first day of training camp for our Washington Redskins. This is where I should probably produce some inspiring and uplifting speech about how RG3 is here and he will bring football back to D.C.! Unfortunately thats not really my style, but I will tell you to expect a lot of posts and thoughts on the Skins in the upcoming weeks because obviously they are getting underway and with so many players there is really just an inordinate amount of things to talk about. Whether its position battles, things/players to watch for the season or just general predictions, I will make sure to have it all for you here at the great and wonderful Beltway Sports Blog!
