National’s Top 10 Prospects Midseason Grades

With the Major League All-Star game being played tonight in Kansas City, it’s officially time to go back and evaluate the first half of the season before looking forward to the second half. I’ve listed below each of the National’s current top 10 prospects (and 2 bonus prospects) and their statistics so far at the level each one is currently playing at. I’ve based my grades on 3 major factors:

Experience – Players fresh out of the draft will get more lenient grades than guys in their 3rd or 4th season as a minor leaguer. Struggling a bit in a player’s first action as a pro is to be expected but when a guy is still having trouble after 2 or 3 full seasons that’s a cause for concern.  Read more...

Hagerstown Suns’ Roster Still Stacked With Young Talent

Just one year removed from seeing mega-prospect Bryce Harper depart for higher levels, the Hagerstown Suns’ roster posses more talent now than ever before. They currently have a record of 42-27 and although I know wins don’t mean anything in the minors it does help illustrate how good this team is compared to the other South Atlantic League ball clubs. There are obviously a number of guys contributing to their dominance, but here are some of the biggest standouts:

National’s Top 10 Prospects May Report Card

Now that the second month of the baseball season is in the books it’s a good time to check back in on the prospects and their progress so far. Listed below I have the top 10 Oriole prospects according to MLB.com and the numbers they have put up so far this season. Based on those numbers and my observations I’ll award each player a letter grade for his play in May. The numbers in parenthesis indicate each statistics change since my April Report Card…

Dylan Bundy Tracker: 5 IP 0 ER 1 Hit 1 BB 4 K’s

Another dominant performance by Dylan Bundy today as he shut out the Hagerstown Suns and limited them to only 2 baserunners over 5 innings. From what I have heard from people who were at the game, Bundy was throwing mostly hard stuff and seemed to be solely working on his 4 seam fastball and cutter. I assume at this point he is just working on certain pitches for each game because when he uses them all he seems basically unhittable at this level. Apparently he had 4 or 5 hard hit balls against him so it seems like even at this level the hitters are starting to catch on a bit seeing that he has had some trouble (by that I mean a few hits) in each of his past few games combined after basically pitching perfectly to begin the season. I also heard that he had a little trouble with his command again today but obviously it wasn’t really bad or anything because he only walked 1 guy through 5 innings. This is his first pro win surprisingly as the Shorebirds ended up beating the Suns 3-1. Apparently he has one more start in Delmarva after this before he moves up, but no one (outside of the organization I assume) is quite sure if he will move up to Frederick or all the way to Bowie.  Read more...
