Pat’s NFL Season Predictions

I am going to list all of the teams predicted records, and write something about each division champion im my predictions.

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys: 8-8

The Cowboys won their first game against the Giants and looked very good. I think 8-8 will be good enough to win this division,

Washington Redskins: 7-9

New York Giants: 7-9

Philadelphia Eagles: 7-9

NFC South

Atlanta Falcons: 12-4

The Falcons have so many offensive weapons and the Saints will be without their coach the whole season.

New Orleans Saints: 10-6

Carolina Panthers: 7-9

Rice, Ravens Agree to Five Year Deal

The Baltimore Ravens and running back Ray Rice reached an agreement on a long term deal just before today’s (7/16) 4 pm deadline when franchise tags became no longer revocable. The deal is a 5 year contract worth up to $40 million, with $17 million being paid this season. The 25 year old Rice is coming off his best season as a pro, setting career highs in rushing yards (1,364), rushing touchdowns (12), receiving yards (704), and touchdown receptions (3) in route to being named to his second consecutive pro bowl. Rice also lead the NFL in yards from scrimmage (2068) and was undoubtedly the focal point of a Raven’s offense that may have been the best in franchise history, averaging just under 24 points per game (12th in NFL). With Rice’s deal out of the way the Ravens can now focus their attention on getting a long term deal worked out with quarterback Joe Flacco, who’s entering the final year of his rookie deal. The Ravens, Ray Rice, and Raven’s fans everywhere can now breathe a sigh of relief and start getting excited about football season.

Ravens Sign WR/KR Jacoby Jones and Extend SS Bernard Pollard

On Tuesday the Ravens helped their offense by bringing in former Texan’s speedster Jacoby Jones and helped their defense by extending the contract of hard hitting Benard Pollard. Jones was brought in on a 2 year $7 million contract to be the Raven’s number 3 receiver behind Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith and possibly to be their return man. Jones is a 5 year NFL veteran who although never spectacular, has put up solid numbers for a number 3 receiver and been one of the better return men in the league. The last 3 seasons Jacoby has averaged just over 500 yards and nearly 4 tds. The Ravens will line him up on the outside oppisite Torrey Smith which will allow them to move Anquan Boldin to the inside in 3 wide sets as the slot receiver. Most Ravens fans will remember him fondly for his 2 fumbles in the playoff game against the Texans at M & T Bank Stadium this past January that ultimately led to Baltimore advancing to the AFC title game.

Terrell Suggs Has Torn Achilles Tendon

According to former Redskins GM and current 105.7 the fan radio personality Vinny Cerato, 2011 Defensive Player of the Year Terrell Suggs has suffered a torn Achilles tendon while playing in a pickup basketball game. The news has not yet been confirmed by TSizzle or the Ravens but the Ravens did release a statement saying “We are in contact with Terrell. He will see a specialist early next week, and we’ll know more at that time.” So there is certainly an injury of some kind. If that injury is in fact a torn Achilles tendon, the Ravens will likely be without Sizzle for the entire 2012 season. This is a devastating blow to a Baltimore team that was expected to be one of the top contenders to represent the AFC in the Superbowl this season. If there is any silver lining in this situation it’s that the Ravens opted to select an outside linebacker with their first pick in this year draft rather than a lineman or wide receiver as many hoped they would. That pick, Courtney Upshaw out of Alabama, will have to play at a high level this year to try and make up for the monumental loss of production with Suggs out. New defensive coordinator Dean Pees will have his work cut out for him this season to find a scheme that can still get pressure on the quarterback without his most potent rusher. To do that he will have to get big years out of 4th year pro Paul Kruger and 3rd year pro Sergio Kindle.

Mock Draft 2.0

Just one more day until round 1 of the 2012 NFL draft gets underway and outside of the top two picks, anything can happen. Now that the rookie wage scale has lowered the risk of first round picks, we may see more trade action this year than we have in a long time. With that said this year’s draft should be a lot of fun, here’s my best guess…

1. Indianapolis Colts – Top 3 Needs: QB, DT, CB

Selection: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

2. Washington Redskins – Top 3 Needs: QB, WR, OL
