Wizards Cap Situation for 2012 and Beyond

As another disappointing season comes to an end for the Wizards, it is time to look forward to look for a cure to our current woes.  With a little bit of cap magic and wise moves, Washington may be able to conjure a future that contains something other than bleak hopelessness.  Below I have listed the salary amounts for the Wizards in 2012 according to sham sports and some of my own additions.

Maryland Picks up Michigan Transfer Evan Smotcryz for Basketball

Maryland has added yet another player to their team in the form of Evan Smotrycz, a Michigan Power Forward.  With a name sure to baffle commentators and a shot that will do the same to opponents, Smotrycz is a solid pick up for the Terps.  A quick scouting take shows a combination of size and shooting that will be hard for opponents to match.  This is big for a Terps team who were in desperate need of both.  While Smotrycz will have to sit out a year, the wait will be well worth it.  His uniqueness warrants being patient as he is a proven high D1 level player.  I must say that I am quite excited to see him on the court in a year and a half.

Mychal Parker Transferring

Terps Forward Mychal Parker has announced in a letter that he will be transferring from the University of Maryland.  He cited lack of future playing time as the reason and it seems Turgeon let him know that his opportunities would be limited.  As someone who is a Parker fan, I am saddened by the news but realize that it is probably the best thing for both sides. He will get a chance to develop on a better situation and the Terps will be able to recruit harder with an extra scholarship.  With the decommitment of Sam Cassell Jr. and this transfer, the Terps have eleven scholarship players this year and ten next year. It seems likely that either Cassell and/ or a possible transfer will be added between now and the start of the season.  Turgeon is looking at Michigan Forward Evan Smotrycz as his top transfer target.  He is a stretch four and has started a number of games for the Wolverines in the last two years.  He would provide a dimension that the Terps do not currently possess with his size and shooting.  This has been a busy late season recruiting season for the Terps as they try to make it back to the NCAA tournament.

Terps Sign Local Star

The Maryland Terrapins have signed their sixth prospect for 2012 with the signing of Sam Cassell Jr.  The son of a former NBA player Sam Cassell, he has playmaking ability that will help the Terps in the upcoming year.  You can check out his highlights at here.  From that video and various scouting reports, it is clear Cassell is a big time scorer who can help with the ball handling duties.  This will be big for the Terps as their only real point guard type is Pe’Shon Howard and he has had injury issues.  Also Cassell would likely become one of the best outside shooters for the Terps along with Terrell Stoglin and fellow freshmen Seth Allen and Jake Layman.  Finally, Cassell is from the Baltimore area and this signing shows how far Turgeon and his staff is willing to shore up the local area.  This is most likely the last signing for the Terps and I must say I like how this team looks and expect big things for the Terps.

Indiana Pacers vs. Washington Wizards

The Wizards face off against the Pacers tonight in one exciting game!  Nene is coming off his Wizard’s debut and his arrival has marked a new era in Washington.  After a big first game it will be interesting to see if he can keep up against a better front line.  Right now the Pacers have had a rough stretch of play but they are coming off a big win against the Clippers.  Right now I will take the Pacers at the current line of -7 and the under at the current over/under of 200.

Stoglin Returning for 2012/2013 Season

Today Terrell Stoglin announced that he is returning to Maryland after a brief flirtation with the NBA. As I mentioned in yesterday’s season review, this was quite inevitable.  Stoglin is simply not at the level of a NBA player despite being a 2nd team All-ACC performer this year.  In order to get to that level he needs to work on his point guard skills as he projects to be a that position at the next level.  It may surprise some fans but the best NBA prospect on the Terps is probably Center Alex Len.  Stoglin is the best college player on the roster and his coming back keeps Maryland in contention for a possible NCAA bid.  After two years of no postseason play that would be great for the impatient Maryland fan base.
