Oct. 29th: Terps Day of Reckoning

Quick Post for all of you Terps Basketball fans out there: According to college basketball writer Adam Zagoria (@AdamZagoria), the Harrison Twins have confirmed that they will announce their college choice on October 29, 2012.

The Twins, Andrew and Aaron, are widely regarded as two of the best prospects in the 2013 class and are the best package deal to come into college basketball in a very long time. They currently list their options as Maryland, Kentucky, Baylor, Villanova, and SMU, though they are expected to choose from between the first 3.

Ashton Pankey Leaves UMD: Merl’s Take

Eddie already really covered Pankey’s transfer, but I just had to quickly put in my 2 cents: First and foremost, as Eddie said, if Pankey’s mother or any other member of his family is experiencing health problems, I wish them all the best, and hopefully a speedy recovery.

That said: This transfer is a big net positive for the Terps in the long run, and really only a minor negative — if at all — in the short run.

Grading the 2012 Redskins Draft

I hope you all had a Merry Griffmas. Here are my pick by pick grades for the Redskins 2012 draft:

(2) Robert Griffin III, QB: A+
I will always say that they could have gotten the #2 overall pick by giving up less, but that being said I do love the potential that RG3 brings to the table, and I think he should be a really good match for the Shanahan’s system. Besides the few snickers about him being selfish right before the draft, which sure seems like former high school teammates simply being petty, there is almost nothing negative to say about this guy. This is the most excited I have been about the Redskins offense in literally my entire life.

Merl Mock

Since I already put this together for a mock draft pool with some friends (including @eswickenheiser), I figured I might as well post it. A few notes:

  • I’m not trying to project trades, as it could get really insane with the rookie wage scale, so I’m simply trying to match player to slot.
  • I’m not going to provide an explanation for each pick, so I will simply try and give you my over-arching rationale: 99% of the information that has come out in the last few days (Kalil falling, the Vikings preferring Claiborne, the Jets trying to trade up for Richardson) is misinformation and I will not fall for it. I might be wrong here or there because of it, but I’m confident that if I ignore the last 48 hours of information I will come out ahead.

Terps MBB Recruiting Recap

As the recruiting season for the 2012-2013 season comes to end, now would be a pretty good time to recap how the Terps Men’s Basketball recruiting class has come together. It is an even better time to have the discussion since the Terps just gained their 6th, and almost certainly final, commitment for the 2012 class yesterday evening when 6′ 3″ combo guard Sam Cassell Jr. (yes, the son of that Sam Cassell) agreed to join Mark Turgeon and his squad.

Chris Merl

I am a graduate of University of Maryland, College Park, Class of 2010, with a Degree in Operations Management. Having lived in either Howard, PG, or Montgomery County my entire life, and now working in DC, I have been exposed to all of the sports the DC Metro-Baltimore area has to offer, and have experienced a good majority of the pain here in the last two decades.
