According to various reports, the Orioles have traded for Phillies 1st basemen/DH Jim Thome. Not sure who the trade is for yet and it won’t be officially announced for untill the O’s are finished getting shellacked by the Indians but apparently it is for some sort of Triple-A pitcher, but apparently no one very good. Thome is 41 years old now and primarily DH’s because of his age. In 62 AB’s this year he has 5 home runs, is hitting .242, and has struck out 21 times. I don’t really understand the trade because he basically just seems like an older Davis/Betemit/Reynolds/whatever other low average/high strikeout power guy. It’s not a big deal because apparently we aren’t giving up anyone of consequence and at least its fresh blood in the locker room but I pretty much expect the same prediction from Thome as I do those other guys.
Update 6:34 PM: It looks like the O’s actually are going to trade away Frederick pitcher Dylan Bundy Kyle Simon as he was scratched from his start today according to various reports. Simon is 22 years old and was the 4th round pick of the O’s last year. He has had a 3.96 ERA this year with the Keys with a 49/21 strikeout-walk ratio. Probably gave up a little better player than I wanted but most likely wouldn’t have made a difference anyways.
Update 7:03 PM: It looks like the trade is official now and ther has been one more player added to the trade for Jim Thome. Gabriel Lino of the Delmarva Shorebirds is also part of the deal. Lino is in his 1st year with the Orioles has he is only 19 years old and is hitting .218 in 206 at bats for the Shorebirds this season. Lino was Delmarva’s starting catcher.
