Orioles’ 19 year old first base prospect, Nick Delmonico, took home MVP honors of the 2012 South Atlantic League All-Star game last night in Charleston South Carolina. Delmonico went 2 for 4 with a double and 2 runs scored, leading the North All-Stars to a 3-2 victory. The Orioles have to fell pretty good about the way their 2011 6th round pick has performed in his first year as a pro. As a teenager Delmonico is already the Shorebird’s best hitter, leading the team in doubles with 19, home runs with 6, runs batted in with 43, and has shown good speed, going 6 for 6 in stolen base attempts. He’s been a shaky defensively with 16 errors, but that’s to be expected for a young guy trying to learn not just one but two new positions (1B and 2B, played 3B as an amateur). With Delmonico already excelling after just two months as a pro the future looks very bright for him, and it won’t be long until he makes the jump to Frederick if he can keep it up.
