Yesterday morning the Terps starting PG Pe’Shon Howard was arrested for disorderly conduct outside a College Park restaurant. From what I read basically what happened was that there was some sort of fight going on that Howard was not in but the guy who started the fight was being restrained by police and Howard kept yelling at him for whatever reason. The police decided he was distracting them too much so they arrested him and he was released after being issued the citation. At least that is what I have gathered from the reports that I have read.
Obviously I was not there and am not sure what the problem was or how is affected Pe’Shon but his involvement seemed pretty unnecessary, at least from outsiders perspective. Either way though the police even said that while Howard will have to appear in court for this citation it is nothing major. It most likely won’t affect the Terps basketball at all next season because I doubt he would be suspended for something so light (relatively speaking) but who knows if more details will come out that will make it seem worse. Only problem basketball wise is if he is suspended for a game is that our 1st game of the year is against Kentucky…. The main problem with this arrest (other than the fact that getting arrested is a very bad thing for anybody) is that it will cast a bad light on Maryland basketball. The same time that Stoglin leaves for the NBA because he was suspended for a year for most likely failing a drug test, the Terps other starter in the backcourt was arrested. While Howard’s offense wasn’t that serious at all, it certainly will not read well in the papers or on the internet. This is definitely the first black mark on Turgeon’s tenure at Maryland but hopefully things will get cleared up quickly and we can move on.
All in all while I doubt this will affect Maryland basketball too much in the long run, it definitely is not a good thing and will cast a shadow on the program.
