So as you all know by now one of the most important parts of this season is for the Wizards to get a good draft selection so they can get the best player available. Obviously with the NBA system the way that it is, there is no guaranteeing yourself a top 3 pick but by losing as much as possible you can certainly increase your chances of getting a high pick. As of right now the bottom the NBA standings are as follows:
6. Toronto Raptors: 22-40
5. Cleveland Cavaliers: 20-39
4. Sacramento Kings: 20-41
3. New Orleans Hornets: 19-42
2. Washington Wizards: 15-46
1. Charlotte Bobcats: 7-53
Since this is only a 66 game season we only have 5 games left and most of these teams have about those many games left as well. As you can see we have no chance of catching the Raptors as we are 7 games back in the win column with only 5 games left. We cannot catch the Kings either because we are 5 games in the win column back from them and they beat us in our 1 meeting so they have the tiebreaker over us. We technically can still catch the Cavaliers as we would have to win the rest of our games (we still have one left against them) and they would have to lose the rest of theirs and then we would win the tiebreaker. Obviously very unlikely. The last scenario is the Hornets who we are 4 games behind with 5 games left and we own the tiebreaker over them (in a bad way). Still though the only way we catch them is by going 4-1 over our last 5 and having them lose the rest of their games (once again, obviously a very slim chance). As you can probably tell by now we have no chance of catching the Bobcats as we are somehow up by 8 games in the win column on them and they only have 7 games left. Here is our remaining schedule:

Like I said the chances we go 4-1 against any 5 NBA teams is slim and the way the Hornets are playing now I doubt they go winless in their last 5 games anyways, though their schedule is fairly difficult. The good news for us is that we play the Heat twice and a Bucks team (albeit at home) that is fighting for a playoff spot. The bad news is we play a bad Cleveland team and a horrible Charlotte team so those are both possible wins for us. Also our last game is against the Heat and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they were trying to rest some of their players with the 2nd seed in the East all most assuredly locked up in both directions and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they rested some of if not all of their big 3 to rest up for the playoffs and because they are playing the lowly Wizards.
Like I said though I highly doubt any of this will become a problem, I would predict the Wiz go something like 2-3 in their remaining 5 games and we easily lock up that 2nd spot in the lottery. I would say it’s about a 95% chance of that happening so it’s probably much ado about nothing but I thought it was worth writing about. If we hadn’t somehow beat the team with the NBA’s best record last night than this would even less of an issue but James Singleton would not be denied. Either way I will update you in the next few days on if/when the Wizards lock up that 2nd lottery spot and explain the ramifications of that.
