I’ll Have Another Wins Preakness Stakes

Today was one of Maryland’s longest and greatest traditions, the Preakness Stakes and it was a great day for the sport as the Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another defeated Bodemeister in the last couple of furlongs to set up a possible triple crown at the Belmont. I am not horse racing expert but I’ll Have Another’s jockey Mario Guterriez seemed to ride his horse perfectly today as he eased around the home stretch and seemed to turn it on at the perfect point to edge the favorite Bodemeister. The course was running slow today but this didn’t stop Bodemeister from getting out to a decent pace at 48.6 at the halfway mark. Obviously the most exciting part about this is the fact that now I’ll Have Another will have a chance at the Belmont Stakes in 3 weeks to become the first horse since Secretariat in 1977 to win the triple crown. It will certainly be a challenge as that course is easily the longest of the three at 1.5 miles but this horse has already won the first two, so why not have another?

Justin Verlander Loses Potential 3rd Career No Hitter With 1 Out in 9th

Detroit Tigers right hander and reigning American League Cy Young and MVP Justin Verlander almost became just the 6th pitcher to record 3 no hitters. His first was against the Brewers in 2007 and his 2nd was against the Blue Jays just last year. At just 29 years old he would have been in a position that with just one more no no he would move into a tie with Sandy Koufax for 2nd on the all time no hitter list with 4, but he’d still have a long way to catch Nolan Ryan’s record of 7. Although Verlander couldn’t quite seal the deal against the Pirates tonight, he still turned in an amazing outing, getting the complete game shutout allowing just 1 hit, 2 walks and striking out 12. Would have been fun to see another no hitter but seeing that kind of dominance isn’t a bad consellation prize. Verlander’s start tonight makes a statement, and that statement is he’s still baseballs best pitcher.

May the Beltway Series Begin!

Being that this is the Beltway Sports Blog, I thought it was important to let people know that the two beltway teams are playing each other in a series this weekend at Nationals Park. The Nationals and Orioles split six games in 2011, with each club taking two of three at home. While the Orioles are 25-26 all-time against the Nats, this year is a little bit different from the others because both teams are doing well. The Orioles are having their best start in years and are sitting at 25-14 and at the top of the American League East while the Nationals are 23-14 and only 1/2 game outside the lead in the National League East. Due to the fact that they are in different leagues, they may never have a true rivalry going much like the Skins and Ravens but it’s always good to see the two teams square up and see who is the best of the beltway! Whoever wins though, it is definitely an exciting time for the beltway teams and the Beltway Sports Blog and take a look at both Patty and Jesse’s predictions for the series!
